Dr. Toby Dore’ is the owner and founder of Cajun Stays and began his hosting journey with Airbnb in 2013. Working as a full-time University Professor by day and managing two music venues by night inspired a six-week cross-country round trip road trip from Louisiana to Canada.
Dr. Dore’ also happened to be finishing up a book on minimalism called “The Joy of Less”. One of the last bands he ever hired, a married couple from California, suggested that he use a site called Airbnb instead of hotels. At the time Airbnb was virtually unknown in the Louisiana area. Within a few weeks his 3-bedroom, 2 bath house was cleaned out and booked for the entire length of his trip. His first most unique stays were a motor home in a family’s front yard near Mount Rushmore and an off the grid concrete dome shelter in the Texas desert. Upon returning home from his trip, Dr. Dore’ cleaned out his office and installed two bunk beds. Cajun Hostel (now Cajun Stays) was born! In his spare time Toby has also managed to travel solo to 53 countries and start a travel blog called “The Cajun Traveler”. Today Cajun Stays boasts just under 5,000 reviews on Airbnb and currently manages 21 units in downtown Lafayette, Louisiana, the heart of “Cajun Country’ and once deemed the happiest city in America.
